Unprotected Texts Bible Study Location Moves!

Next Unprotected Texts Bible Study:
Monday, April 4
10 – noon
85 Henry Lane Terrace, Toronto, ON M5A 4B8
RSVP to Mary Druce, marydruce@rogers.com.

After a very exciting discussion about Japhtheh’s daughter (March 14), we went on to study Delilah (March 21), and then Ruth (March 28), and on Monday, April 4, we will now be discussing the story of Tamar.

We had been meeting Mondays from 10am to noon at the old SLNA office at the St. Lawrence Community and Recreation Centre. We felt as though we were in a prison cell there so we thought we’d move to a more cosy place to meet, which is at the Cathedral Court Co-operative Homes Corp., 85 Henry Lane Terrace, Toronto, ON M5A 4B8. There is a kitchen there so we can actually make tea and share some cookies.

There’s still lots of room to come and join us. Don’t worry if you have no bibles. I have a good supply of Gideon’s bibles to give away. (yeah– it’s the same one they leave in hotels). I have been using the NRSV.

Jephthah’s Daughter

Meditation

For four days every year the daughters of Israel would go out to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

“Unprotected texts” continued with the study of Jephthah’s Daughter, provoking discussion about superheroes Jephthah and Samson and the stories of women around them, particularly of Jephthah’s daughter – unnamed and Delilah.

NEXT: The Story of Ruth

“Unprotected Texts,” Monday Study Sessions

Art Exhibit Postcard

On February 5, I held a reception for my very first solo art exhibition, with Old Town ARTbeat, a neighbourhood arts group, which identifies itself as, “neighbours supporting and promoting art in our community , featuring music, drama, poetry, words, visual arts and more.”

As a result of the art exhibit, “Saphira and Other Stories Brought to Light,” featuring  my artwork (and Old Town ARTbeat posters!) that were trying to offer a material trace of Biblical narratives, many requested more information about these stories and what they mean. The story of Saphira was intriguing; that of Jephthah’s daughter was chilling.

“Unprotected texts,” Monday Study Sessions will be offered on six Mondays from March 14 to April 18. “Unprotected” simply means without embellishment or any covering. Sometimes we “protect” ourselves from texts when they become problematic, or tend to sway us to think in a way we are not ready for. To “protect” means that we create layers on top of stories so that we can easily live with them. To “unprotect” means that we strip down those layers. We may also examine how and why those layers were chosen for protection.

Our first session will be on Monday, March 14 at 10 am to noon.  Participants are welcome to bring their own Bible  and copies will be available as well.  I will also bring a copy of Lion Feuchtwanger’s novel, Jephta and his Daughter, as it was mentioned during the exhibition. Someone wrote to me later about the The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant, about the life of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob.  I will also be bringing “Stories seldom told : Biblical stories retold for children & adults,” and another book by Lois Wilson.
Please wear comfortable clothing. I am not sure if we can still do yoga but  I was able to secure the old SLNA office at the St. Lawrence Community and Recreation Centre, 230 The Esplanade .  This room is on the level where the lockers and change rooms are, toward the eastern end of the building.  I will put up signs and directions to the room.
I look forward to uncovering these stories and texts with you.
Please call if you have any questions.  Thank you.

Salaam,
TinaC.

Welcome

Faith seeking understanding – an inquiry into spiritual practice for a new day.

Are you a refugee from religion, not grabbed by the usual churches, but seeking something deep?   An ancient soul embodied in some new ways of gathering for community, wholeness, exploration, and living deeply in the world?

B2L is a set of gatherings, set in the neighbourhoods east of downtown, for delving into all the above.

We’d love to keep you posted as we schedule things.  Check in here to see when the next events will be (always open to whoever wants to be there, and never any charge), or drop a note to one of our folks and we will send you occasional notices (and nothing else!)
